I am a 60 year old disabled man with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). I was diagnosed with this insidious and incurable disease of the central nerve system in 1995. I am in a secondary progressive stage of this disease that continues to perplex medical science.
Brief facts about MS:
- Over 21,000 Australians have MS, incidence grows yearly exceeding our rate of population growth!
- Affects three times as many woman as men!
- Average age of diagnosis is 30; affects more young people than any other neurological condition
- The course of this incurable disease is unpredictable, variable and frequently very debilitating.
MS Australia is a wonderful dedicated non-profit organisation approved by the Australian Taxation Office as a charity. MS Australia do absolutely terrific work with a great many volunteers and dedicated professional staff in supporting the many people suffering with MS in our community.
My Story
Before MS I jogged daily, wind surfed, played basketball and fished etc. Within 6 months I could not run, play sports or fish without assistance. My life became very difficult suffering incontinence, neuropathic pain, optic neuritis, difficulty swallowing, cognitive issues, memory loss, numbness, poor balance, leg weakness, spasms, cramps and fatigue. All which I continue to endure in varying degrees today.
I tried alternative medications and treatments including a Bone Marrow Transplant in 2001 in a desperate bid to alter the course of the disease and gain time in employment and better health. Unfortunately MS won forcing me to retire in 2006 from a role I enjoyed.
Late in 2007 I was also diagnosed with T2 Diabetes and Osteoporosis. I was becoming less mobile and more reliant on various mobility aids. Felt like I was on a very "slippery slope" and I had to find a way to turn this around. I needed a way to exercise and cycling appeared a possibility.
Not able ride a normal bicycle due to my physical disabilities, I searched for a recumbent tricycle like I had seen . I found a recumbent tricycle as pictured made right here in Australia designed for less agile or disabled persons such as myself.
Initially I could hardly ride out of our home street with my weak legs and poor coordination. I persevered and with modifications made to the trike I gradually improved. After riding every day for the past 3 years I now ride over 130 km's a week, deriving many benefits in my general health, fitness and wellbeing.
MS Australia aims to minimise the impact of multiple sclerosis on all individuals affected by the disease, as well as their families, carers and the community, by offering a wide range of services, equipment and support. MS Australia's goal is to assist everyone affected by MS to live life to their fullest potential and secure the care and support they need, until we ultimately find a cure.
